Basement waterproofing in Westmont
For the hilltop borough of large older homes reached by the Johnstown Inclined Plane.
Westmont is a borough of 4,982 people (2020 census) on the heights west of downtown Johnstown, rising as much as 700 feet above the Stonycreek and Conemaugh valleys. The Cambria Iron Company developed it as a suburb for its senior staff, and the Johnstown Inclined Plane was built to link the hilltop to the city. The Westmont Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
Why would a hilltop basement leak?
Sitting high above the river spared Westmont from the floods that hit the valley, but height doesn't keep a basement dry. Rain still soaks into the soil around foundations, and heavy ground holds it there. Many of the borough's homes are large and old, with deep basements, masonry walls and generations of gutter and downspout changes. Water problems here tend to come from roof runoff, failed footer drains and aging mortar rather than a high water table.
Common jobs in Westmont
- Repointing and sealing older masonry foundations

Permits in the borough
Westmont has adopted Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code, and under its ordinance a permit is good for one year and lapses if work doesn't start within 90 days. Westmont is a separate municipality from Johnstown, so check with the borough about your project.

Is my Westmont home too old to waterproof?
Not usually. Older masonry basements can often be made much drier with drainage fixes, careful repointing and humidity control. How dry depends on the walls and the lot.
